It can be difficult to undo a weld on fused metal since the weld is stronger than the pieces of metal on each side of it. There are a few ways to separate the metal though, and we’ll look at some here.
The first method is to use a torch. Mark the metal where you need to make the cut and make sure the metal piece is secured in place with clamps. Light your cutting torch and adjust the flame. Now move the torch along the marked line slowly, to allow the flame to cut all the way through but not melt excess materials. Allow the metal to cool before handling again.
Another way to separate your welded metal is with a grinder or a circular saw. Again, you’ll want to ensure your pieces are secure before you begin cutting. Line up your cutting wheel with the mark and keep the wheel perpendicular to the surface of the metal. Let the wheel cut down through the metal and then push away from yourself in a straight line to cut all the way through your piece. Allow the metal to cool before handling.
Lastly, you can use a reciprocating saw or a hacksaw. Mark and clamp the piece, position the saw blade perpendicular to the edge, not the surface, and hold steady as the blade cuts through the material. If you are using a hacksaw, keep the blade perpendicular as you saw through the material.
Keep in mind when separating welded metal, you will likely be losing a chunk of your material in the middle as these cuts are meant to be done on either side of the weld. Usually, the welded portion itself will be too strong for home tools to cut through safely.
