Will Metal Ever Run Out

kama 1

For a while, metal prices were falling continually. Currently, we are dealing with a lack of materials needed due to a number of different factors. It bears asking the question, will metal resources ever simply run out?

One of the rarest metals on earth, used in the production of some solar panels is used at a rate of 125 tonnes per year, globally. We essentially have a million-year supply of this metal. Considering this, it feels safe to say that no, we will not in fact be running out of metal any time soon.

The main question is more can we continue to get our metals at a price we want to pay for them. If we want to use more metal than we can cheaply extract from ores then the price would rise and a high enough price would mean that we don’t want to use that material anymore. So, it is likely we will always have a supply of metal around the price we want to pay for it.

Metal is able to stay a relatively low price because we use less of any one specific metal to perform a task. We also have improved and continue to improve mimicking the geological processes that lead to ore body formations naturally. Creating our own economic concentrations rather than going to dig for them is a huge benefit.

There will always be times when prices fluctuate due to demand or shortages of certain concentrations but the better we get at digging them up and using fewer resources to do so, the prices over the long term should continue to stay the same or decline.

So, while certain events may trigger shortages of certain materials or cause price fluctuations, metal has always been a highly needed resource, and the methods to getting it have been improved upon year after year.
