Basic Metalwork Tips and Tricks

unnamed 3

Metalworking is an art to some, a hobby to others, and a trade to more. No matter how you look at your metalwork, all of these are true and can mean different things to different people. As you may already know, some metals can be welded and some cannot and there are various types of metals you can use in your projects. Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional, there are many factors that go into choosing your materials and the type of projects you will do.

Metals are generally malleable, so what is the right metal to choose? Well, this depends on the project, of course. Steel and aluminum are very popular choices for a variety of projects. If you are looking for some color, stainless steel produces a rainbow of colors when heated and copper is great for a rustic-inspired piece.

If you are looking into doing some DIY metalwork like garden art or sculptures, what tools do you need for the job? Recycled metal/scrap metal are great choices for these types of jobs and are a great way to eliminate waste!

You will need a cutting torch such as a plasma torch to cut your metal, a welder, and an angle grinder. These tools will help you to cut, shape, and piece together your parts to form the rough shape of your project. You will also need a vice to fixate pieces you need to hold in place or as a gripping tool. Chalk will help you to mark out your cuts and angles and give you a nice line to work off of. Don’t forget your safety gear as well! Safety glasses, earplugs, and gloves are all just as important to have as the tools listed above. You wouldn’t want to run into any setbacks during your project and an accident isn’t something anyone wants to deal with.

So if you’re looking to do your own projects this summer, remember, the list isn’t too long on the types of tools you need to complete small projects. As you grow and learn you may start to grow your tool selection and when you do, remember to visit us at kamabandsaw.com for quality parts and tools!
