Metalworking Crafts for Kids

If you’re looking for something fun to do with the kids and you have some general metalworking experience, maybe take them into the workshop and do some DIY projects together. Here are some ideas on projects you can help them complete. Always remember to use proper safety gear and take all precautions when working on projects like this.

Metal stipple art can be made with tin from cans. Get a hammer and a nail and pick a design you want to make. Either you or your child can trace out the pattern and then it’s sort of like paint by numbers. They’ll have a fun, handmade piece of art for their room!

Similarly, you can make tin can lanterns. Clean the label and glue off of a clean can and punch your holes all the way through. Put holes in the top to hang it or place it in the garden. Use LED candles and you’ve got a nice decoration.

Using a cake pan or similar item you can create a windmill. Use sticks for the legs, a nail to hold the blades, and cut the tin into blades. Bend them, attach them to a block of wood and you have a homemade windmill!

Create spaceships or cars out of scrap you have laying around. Let the imagination really run wild here and piece together whatever you can dream up!

Flatten out some tin cans and let your child stamp designs onto them. Help them bend the tin back to a round shape and make a shell for a turtle. Making your own toys can be fun, just make sure you always soften the edges or use tape to ensure nobody gets cut!

Another easy project is to make bookends for your little one’s bookshelf. You can create these using some wood and flattened tin for bases. Decorate these, stain them, or paint them so they are custom to you or your child.
