Metalworking Fluids

Metalworking fluids are used to meet productivity and quality requirements in operations such as grinding, boring, or cutting. This fluid is used to cool and lubricate. Metal removal processes generate a lot of heat which is what makes metalworking fluids so important. The use of these lubricants ensures a longer blade or grinding wheel life, as well. What are some of the types of fluids used?

Mineral or vegetable oils make up your most basic form of fluid. Petroleum oils are typically severely hydrotreated which is a refining process that reduces polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs present in crude oil. Some other oils of animals or synthetic origin can be used alone or in combination with straight oils to increase lubrication.

Soluble oil can also be referred to as emulsifiable oil. It is made from around thirty to eighty-five percent severely refined lubricant base oil and emulsifiers. This helps it to disperse the oil in water. This fluid concentrate also usually includes other additives for performance and life benefits to the fluid. These are better at cooling than straight oils but the drawback can be that they sometimes have inadequate corrosion control. It can also be difficult to remove the residue of this oil from surfaces and it may smoke.

While your machines or tools may specify a type of oil that should be used or even provide some of the same brands, doing research is always important. Know what you’re working on and what your tools will be doing to know better what requirements you need to meet for them. Caring for your tools is a very important step in getting the best out of them at all times and saving you time and money. If you aren’t keeping up with maintenance or properly lubricating your blades you are asking for trouble where you could have avoided it.
