The Metalworking Industry

Part science and part fabrication for practical applications, metalworking plays a crucial role in the history of our world. It is a driving force in our development and remains central to our capabilities. This process has undergone numerous changes throughout history but in many ways has stayed the same. Things like casting and joining haven’t undergone much change over the years. Metalworking has also allowed secondary processes to develop leading to societies being able to develop wealth, technologies, and tools.

While we may take metal for granted, it is vital to remember that metalworking is a very advanced process. From extracting materials, processing, and working with metal, it is amazing that we discovered it so early in history and developed technologies independently. It is thought that humans were forging copper as early as 8700 BCE and working with metal by 6000 BCE. The majority of ancient metalworkers were using materials like iron, silver, gold, and copper.

While metalwork has always been vital to our societal functions it was so important in ancient times that sometimes metalworkers directly influenced the economic prosperity of a town. Sharing knowledge and techniques between metalworkers from town to town helped form bonds between otherwise estranged groups of people.

The main branches of metalworking consist of metal forming, metal casting, and metal joining. Most metalworkers specialize in one branch, working with other professionals to finalize their products.

Metalworking still plays an essential role in daily life and many of the processes used today vary only slightly from those of ancient metalworkers. The future of the metalworking industry remains bright as we find innovative solutions to create smaller and more compact designs for things such as appliances and other large-scale manufactured items that pertain to our everyday lives. Metalworkers rise to the challenges of creating durable products that aren’t too heavy or bulky to meet the demands of manufacturers every day.
