There are multiple roles in metalworking besides a welder or a blacksmith. Metals are quite diverse and can be used from construction to jewelry making and because of this, there are multiple different professions that work with metals in different settings. The type of metal being used determines these job titles.

Precious metal workers are professionals who manipulate gold, platinum, silver, or other metals used in the production of jewelry, referred to as precious metal workers or jewelers. Jeweler, however, can refer to several types of jewelry workers and is more a generalization. You can become a professional jeweler through a trade school or jewelry design school.

Construction workers are known as structural iron and steelworkers. These are people who manipulate iron and steel and can sometimes also be called ironworkers. These people install iron and steel beams and girders for large buildings and other structures, providing support. Most ironworkers train through a formal apprenticeship for around three to four years.

Sheet metal workers are those who are employed in manufacturing and construction. In construction, sheet metal is used to construct things like roofs, gutters, and ducts for heating and air. In manufacturing, a machine will cut sheet metal to certain specs for larger quantities. This position is also typically obtained by formal apprenticeship lasting around four to five years.

Metallurgical engineers are those materials engineers who specialize in manipulating metal for specific purposes. This typically involved creating alloys of metals like aluminum and steel. It also consists of designing metals to be used in construction and manufacturing. Most people in this position have a degree in engineering, and some may even pursue a master’s degree in the field.
