Bandsaws VS Scroll Saws

Depending on what type of work you’re doing will depend on the tools you need, however, any handyman, metalworker, or carpenter will likely have a variety of tools in their arsenal. Here we will look at scroll saws and the differences in using one vs a bandsaw.

These machines may look about the same at first glance but you should notice a few major differences between them and what jobs they are best at performing.

With a scroll saw you will see a flat work table with a column coming straight up from the back. The top of this column houses an arm parallel to the table with a small blade running vertically from the end of the arm, through the table, and down to a mechanism below. These saws have a very small blade and teeth on one side of that blade. It moves up and down quickly making it able to cut into wood and other materials. Determining what throat size you need is dependent on what size materials you plan to cut. The larger the throat size, the larger materials you will be able to cut. Scroll saws cannot handle long pieces of material due to the column in the back, so you’ll also want to keep this in mind. They also cannot handle materials thicker than around 2 inches because of their 6-inch blades. Changing the blade is very easy, though, and there is typically a tension adjustment knob to easily adjust the tension. The ability to quickly make inside plunge cuts is one of the things that really set this saw apart from the bandsaw. If you are working with smaller and thinner materials the scroll saw is a great choice. It can do decorative and intricate work with a lot of detail.

You will want to use a bandsaw, however, if you are working with larger, thicker materials. Basically, anything over 1.5 inches will be too large. Bandsaws excel more in making very straight cuts and repeating these cuts time and time again.
