Bandsaws are a piece of equipment used in many shops large and small for cutting metal and other materials. There are many things you can do to ensure the safety of yourself and others while using these powerful tools. Practice safety and always make sure you are using your tools correctly to avoid any accidents. Here are some things to always keep in mind.

  • Always keep your hands 3 inches away from the blades.
  • Check your blade tension before beginning a project.
  • Keep a balanced stance while using your machine.
  • Don’t use your thumbs to push material toward the blade.
  • Keep a two-foot perimeter around the saw to avoid slips, falls, and other hazards.
  • Using safety glasses with side shields or a face shield is recommended to avoid damage to the eyes.
  • Refrain from loose-fitting clothing, jewelry, and tie back long hair.
  • The teeth on the blade should point downward.
  • Keep hands away from the path of the blade.
  • Use hearing protection.
  • Shut the machine off if the blade breaks and stand clear until everything settles to a full stop.
  • Disconnect the power before changing the blade or performing any other maintenance on the machine.
  • Never put an object into the blade to stop it faster. Always allow the blade to come to a complete stop on its own.

While a lot of these safety rules seem very obvious, it never hurts to take a look at them every now and then and ensure you aren’t cutting corners or being careless. These machines are very powerful and do their jobs well, but if you make a mistake you can cause a serious injury to yourself or others. Always follow all safety instructions and use common sense when operating large machines such as these.
