There are many forms of metalworking and many materials that can be used for various projects. Today, we thought we’d look at the steps for a project like making a bowl out of copper. So let’s jump right in.
Copper is a reddish metal that reflects red and orange light and absorbs other frequencies in the visible spectrum. It is malleable and a good conductor of heat and electricity. The first step to making a copper bowl is to rough the soft blank disc using an airpower hammer and a roughing head. Then shrink the edge with the hammer, make a ruffle, shrink that ruffle, and shrink the edge heavily. You can choose to leave your hammer spots or not, that’s up to you. Decide what kind of look you’re going for and make any changes at this time. Once you have made this change (or not) you can then anneal the bowl for stretching and you can rough again for a deeper form. You may have to shrink the edge for a while to gain a harder edge. Working with copper can be simple in this type of application for a small bowl to hold change or keys. You will need some tools to get the job done, however. Above was listed an airpower hammer but a simpler list of tools for a smaller, beginner project would consist of metal snips, a ball pein hammer, a propane torch, tongs, a bucket with pickling solution, fresh water, and gloves.
If you enjoy making things at home, give copper a try for a nice small project that will bring some color to your space. If you enjoy the tones of copper pieces and would like to try your hand at making something, try this or various other simple DIY projects like planters, necklaces, a vase, or a bracelet. All of these would be great to practice doing and you might get really good at it and be able to start making your own handmade copper gifts!
