We know that steel consists of carbon and iron and we know it is one of the most versatile alloys in the world. It is used to make things from nails all the way to cars and trucks. But have you ever wanted to know a little more? Today we’ll look at a few fun facts about steel that you may or may not have known.

Did you know that a steel roof can last over half a century? Traditional shingle roofs last around 15-20 years and while that isn’t terrible, steel roofs can last well over half a century which makes them an obvious smart investment choice.

Steel is one of the world’s most recycled materials and because of this, most steel products aren’t made of brand new steel. Steel has a global recycling rate of around 60% so over half of all steel is being recycled and reused. This is due to the ease of recycling, as it can be smelted down and reformed.

Steel is more elastic than rubber. Elasticity refers to a material’s ability to “bounce back” to its original shape after being deformed under stress in some way. Based on the definition of elasticity, steel is more elastic than rubber due to its ability to revert back to its beginning shape faster.

Steel is an alloy consisting of primarily iron and a small amount of carbon. This small amount of carbon though results in steel being about 1,000 times stronger than iron. This is due to the carbon increasing the tensile strength of the material and giving it a superior level of strength.

An average scrapped car yields enough steel to produce four utility poles. This is a big way in which steel is recycled because when a car goes to the scrapyard it can be broken down for parts and the steel that cannot be used can then be recycled.

Steel, as we know, is one of the most versatile and resilient materials we use today in so many applications. There’s so much more to learn about steel but for now, we’ll leave it at these facts. Hope you learned something!
