While humans have always used materials in their surroundings to create works of art from cave paintings to statues and effigies, these artistic skills have obviously increased over time and with the discovery of new materials, new works of art have been created. From shells, bones, teeth, and skin in clothing, it was only a matter of time before the discovery of metal led to some amazing advancements.
When metal was first extracted from ore it was used for weapons for hunting and utensils such as cups, knives, and plates. Later on, the wealthier commissioned metal artists to design chalices and wall art.
The creative force has always been a part of human history and artists have always been among us. Steel was created by the Chinese almost 2,000 years ago and in the middle ages workers such as goldsmiths and coppersmiths began increasing.
The 15th century marks many beautiful works crafted by Spanish silversmiths. Their efforts swayed toward design and aesthetic value rather than simply function. This influenced works from other skilled craftsmen such as woodworkers and clay workers.
The Italian Renaissance gave way to the lost wax process where metalworkers created works using molten bronze to replace wax models in clay molds. Increasing in accuracy over time, this led to to the ability to make smaller statues and more decorative accessories. Clocks and ornaments were some notable works of this time being crafted from bronze and gold. They were first cast in bronze before being coated in gold. These pieces originated from France and were praised as art pieces.
Metal art has continued to progress steadily throughout the years. Today, works of metal art are crafted to be highly detailed and stylized. With modern technology, these processes have been significantly sped up leading to a whole new era of metal boom.
