Metals are commonly seen around the home but we may not always know in what. A common type of metal used in a home is an electroplated form, meaning a thin layer of metal is fused by electrolysis to an object. Let’s look at some of the things metal is used for in the home and what types of metals are used.
Copper is used in plumbing, roofing, and decoration. Copper is a soft metal that can be easily worked. It conducts heat and electricity well which is why it is used the way it is.
Lead is used for flashings and roof coverings because it is soft but heavy metal. It is also resistant to rust.
Mild steel is used in screws and hinges. This is iron with a carbon content of less than .1%. It is prone to rust but it is easily worked.
Nickel silver is used for things like knives and trays. it is an alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc. There is no actual silver involved.
Cast iron can be used for gutters, fire grates, and boilers. It has around 2 to 5 percent carbon. It is very brittle and can be molded but not twisted.
A coating of zinc over steel creates galvanized steel or iron. This allows it to be rustproof and is used in making screws and nails.
There are many other metals used in other parts of the home from decorative to the appliances we use every day. Metal is a huge part of the way that we live and is very important in the integrity of our products. While many things we use metal for could use other materials, metal is by far the best material to use to ensure these items last the test of time and are reliable for us for years to come.
